There are models that can mop and charge themselves, which is a feature essential for families with pets or children. A lot of the top performers in our tests have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. IRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and its i3 EVO sibling the i3 EVO are both identical robots, but they differ in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ an excellent choice for people who want an automated cleaning, hands-free cleaning experience, but aren't afraid of manually emptying their robot's dustbin when it is full.

Both robots are adept at removing surface dirt on floors and carpets and are able to move around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates smart maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO to navigate and clean in a manner that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ and other top-rated robots we evaluated, the i3+ doesn't have a feature for avoiding obstacles which means it can get stuck on things like socks or power cords and it may have trouble navigating across surface transitions, such as from hardwood to carpet.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area in which the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or clutter it might come across. It is also recommended to keep the dustbin and filters clean to prevent them from getting blocked. When the i3+ EVO's internal bin is empty or the battery is depleted, it returns to the docking station and automatically empties the dirt into the station's external dustbin. It then continues cleaning from where it started. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half of continuous use. It takes about three hours to fully recharge.

2. Roomba by iRobot

The iRobot i7+ is an excellent model from iRobot's flagship line and comes with the latest features. It's self-charging and self-navigating. the most crucial feature of all -- it has a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ is able to better map rooms with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also works with iRobot Home to schedule cleaning jobs, and you can control your robot through the app or voice.

In our tests the i7+ was more agile and faster than our runner-up, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it picked up large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. Its greatest advantage over the Eufy is the self-emptying bin, which eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also amazed by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services, which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning session and to move around the room and sweep the area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ with these services. We were able, once connected, to speak commands to the i7+, like "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options to manage the i7+'s preferences and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of cordless vacs that look like minivans or buses, this small Dyson model feels like an old-fashioned sports car. It is powerful enough to replace a stand-up vacuum in the majority of homes, but it is also compact enough to fit on the bookcase or coffee table.

The V10 is powered by seven cells of energy-dense Lithium-ion batteries that can provide energy that lasts for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. The specialized head uses rigid nylon bristles to drive deep into carpets and pick up large particles or fine dust. It has three suction modes to suit the task that is being completed. It is able to quickly change between handheld and floor vacuum robot vacuum, and vice versa.

The main issue with the V10 is its limited run time. Its claims on the market that it can last up to 60 minutes of run time are not true as CR's tests show. It could pick up most types of debris in our tests, and frequently went over the same area many times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps it reach into corners and along the edges of walls and walls, which is a nice feature.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, like our top picks, i3+EVO and the j7+ Series. This means that it can sometimes get stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't in good condition, and frequently will run out of battery before making it back to its original location.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 because it has fewer components that require regular cleaning, comes with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower costs for recurring expenses and has more advanced automation capabilities and is better able to navigate itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for a variety of reasons, since it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter the suction power mode by hand, comes with physical boundary strips, and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and is more effective on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and handled dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86% of it. However, it wasn't particularly well at avoiding higher-up objects like cords or socks which was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than some of the other models we've tested and could be a deterrent for some shoppers.
