Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to let parents rest with their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is ready to be moved to an actual crib.

Size
Cots are smaller than cots. They are smaller than. Cots can also be transformed into toddler beds. However, cots are usually only used for children up to the age of three. If you're opting for a wooden cot, there are usually two sizes available both large and standard both of which will convert into a cot/toddler beds. Selecting the larger one is a good idea if you want your child to sleep in it until they reach approximately three.
Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested the product at home, said she liked the fact that it was a little bigger than a Moses basket, but not too large for the room of her baby. She says that it is easy to get the baby into and out of the cot for night feeds or for soothing, and that its quality is superior to others she has seen that are cheap and flimsy.
Another home-based tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi Lora can be used in a variety of ways - it's a lift-off bassinet that you can move around the home, and it's a blast too. It also comes with an option for large bedside cot inclining the reflux and Large Bedside Cot a machine-washable liner that is breathable. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. In contrast to International or European cot brands, the Lora can fit South African cot mattresses so you don't have to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. It requires a specific bedding set (60x120cm). Find the ideal mattress for your cot here.
Height
When choosing a crib for your bed, choose one that can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It should also be able to be lower to a level that is not in the way so you can lift up your baby to feed them at night or to soothe him. This feature is especially helpful if you're recovering from C-section. The Next2me Cot and Tutti Bambini can be adjusted to an maximum height of 58cm, while the Snuzpod 3 can go up to 63cm and the Knuma Hutch to 70cm.
Another thing to think about is the height you would like to set for the cot's base to be. Some moms find it is easier to lift their babies from their standard Moses baskets if the base is at the lowest level, while some prefer a higher level to give them greater stability. One of our testers for mums stated that the Joie Roomie Glide was a popular option. It has an easily collapsible side that you can push at the touch one button.
Be aware that a bedside or bassinet device is only suitable when your baby is able to hold his head up without assistance, which is usually at around 6 months. This is because of the danger of suffocation. It's also important to know that if you choose a bassinet/bedside sleeper that can be converted into a cot it is necessary to begin removing the sides once your child is able to do this to ensure they don't get out of bed or fall out of bed.
Design
There are a variety of styles of cribs for beds with a range of styles from simple to lavish. The more luxurious options may include features like a built-in night light and a calming centre that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibration to help soothe your baby to sleep, or a swivelling base that makes it easier to reach your child for feedings. Some models can be transformed into an infant bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready to go to their own bed.
The Tutti Bambini CoZee Air, for example has won Bronze at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards for the Best Cot, Moses Basket or Crib category. It has a swivelling bottom that lets you pick up your baby and transfer them to the other side of the crib without having to get out of bed. This is perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean sections or who have to remain in bed for extended periods. Jasmine, a MFM mom who tried this product at home, stated that it was easy to operate and made it easier for her to reach her baby - especially after the c-section.
Chicco Next2me Magic is another alternative. It won Gold in the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards as the best Cot, Moses Basket, or Crib. It has a machine-washable lining, reflux incline, and a rocking feature. It's bigger than other cribs for bed that we tested, but it folds into its travel cot bedside bag to make it relatively compact when it's not in use.
MFM mom home tester Leya loved the practicality of this bedside crib describing how it was designed with babies and parents in mind. It is a fantastic design that is very easy to manoeuvre and it is extremely durable. Its swivelling base is fantastic as it means you can move the bassinet from side to side and one of its sides can be let down to ease access especially for mothers who are recovering from C-sections,' she added.
Safety
A large bedside cot's main safety characteristic is that it can be easily moved up or down so that parents can reach their baby to feed, comfort or change his or her nappy. This means that it's ideal for mothers who still be recovering from a C-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side at the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.
The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).
In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. However the CPSC concluded that such requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were entrapped between the bedside cosleeper sleeper and an adult bed.
Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative clause to the proposed rule for bedside crib or cot sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a baby bassinet.
The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
