Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to let parents rest with their baby at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months old, at which point your baby is ready to be moved to an actual crib.

Size

Height

This means that it's ideal for mothers who still be recovering from a C-section. Choose a model that allows you to lower one side at the push of a button. This way, you can easily lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. You'll also want to be careful not to add anything to the crib that could increase the chance of suffocation, or injury, such as pillows and duvets. These can cause babies to overheat.

The NPR of the CPSC's NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to problems with the product, such as gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents); fabric-sided enclosed openings (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing parts (6 incidents); and miscellaneous other product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC looked into the possibility of introducing additional requirements to bedside sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at least the maximum height requirements for the lowered rail. However the CPSC concluded that such requirements are not practical or effective in reducing the number of incidents in which infants were entrapped between the bedside cosleeper sleeper and an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR involved multiuse bedside sleepers that can be converted to different modes like play yards and bassinets. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC add an alternative clause to the proposed rule for bedside crib or cot sleepers with multiple uses that would allow them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets using an attachment that is removable. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a baby bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing the comments and other suggestions received in response to the NPR on bedside sleeping. The Commission will take into account these comments when deciding on the final rule that is expected to come out in November 2021.
