Radio's impact in America: from WGN to digital age
Radio was a primary way for many Americans to get news and information before digital technology became popular. Additionally, radio was a way for people who were unable to access television or the internet express their opinions.

Chicago is home to twenty radio stations, the first of which began broadcasting in 1924. This includes WGN (World's Greatest Newspaper), owned by Tribune and started on March 29,1924.

Sears became a leader in radio with its Chicago headquarters, Homan Square and its mail order plant. WLS is the World's Largest Retail Store, a brand that Sears launched to capitalize upon its own. WLS quickly established itself as a leader in the Chicago radio market.

As the radio industry grew, jobs near 60608 (illinoismail.top) stations began to change their format. WLS shifted away from rural audiences in favor of the top-40. WCFL followed suit shortly after. Both stations lost a lot of their local appeal when other stations changed their formats to try and attract new listeners.

In the 1980s, FM stations first began appearing on radio dials and quickly gained in popularity. Radio stations on FM were heard more easily and had better sound than AM. Talk programming, which was quickly a huge success on FM, brought radio back to its roots as a news and entertainment medium.

Chicago's flagship radio stations still dominated Chicago AM dials by the 1990s. WGN changed from full-service to sports and talks, but WGN remained dominant. WGCI shifted from a news format to an adult contemporary music station, while WVAZ became a AMFM after merging with Clear Channel.

WGN's ownership changed again in 1999. Chancellor Media purchased it and turned it into a new/talk outlet. Eight Forty Eight, the morning program that had been running for many years, was no longer broadcast. WGN remained the market leader until it was sold to Nexstar, in 2007.
