WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also added to each upgrade.

Upgraded gear is generally more valuable, unless it has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as important for those with lower requirements because of the requirement to roll an exact version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher item level upgrade level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapon. However, the item upgrader kit used to upgrade will be consumed for the duration of time and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be used to create enchantments.

The upgrader can be found in all major cities and is accessible at any time to upgrade your gear. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item level upgrade, but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a chest piece from Benthic to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items which can be used to improve the quality of weapons, tools, armor, and other items. They can be purchased by players through item upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor using a button, which will show an item's preview at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the item slot, and the current item level. For example weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers, or bracers. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones and a few crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount, it can be degraded and sold back to the upgrader for a lower amount of both currency types.

Upgraders for items can be found in many places including the main island as well as some outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and a possibility of getting a new recipe. The discount on upgrades increases with the number of items being upgraded, and can be increased by requiring players to complete specific achievements or complete quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an upgrader for items at the start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who can facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety of methods. This is both a benefit as well as an issue.

In Season 3 the upgrade system was tweaked a bit, with some new features added. Once a player has upgraded to a specific level for an armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level, will cost less. This is even if the items are from an entirely different set of equipment.

The amount of Valorstones required to upgrade is reduced and the discount is available across all accounts. In the same way, the amount of Harbinger Crests needed for upgrades is also reduced and is not available until players have reached certain milestones in their achievement.

Crests

Players have a number of choices when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specialized, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an integral element of the Dragonflight Gear Progression System, which was introduced in version 10.1. They come in four ranks.

This allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest level possible for all their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

It's also essential to use crests with care, since they have only one purpose. It is recommended to put your Whelpling-rank Crests on the top-quality equipment that you can find, item upgrader Kit and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next set of upgrades. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The discount on the account will only apply when all slots on the character are filled with top-quality gear.
