Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and important way to improve the performance of a variety of items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

Rare-grade equipment can be superior to upgraded Common or Magic gear due to their high demands.

Armor

Armor upgrades can be applied to both armor and weapon items. They increase the effectiveness of the item upgrade they are attached to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of games and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged by using a specialist or higher salvage kit to recover upgrade components from other items.

The amount of damage that a piece of armor or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. The absorption of damage by an armor piece will increase when it's upgraded to the highest upgrade level. It is important to keep in mind that this will increase the weight of the armor, which means it should be heavier.

There are a variety of armor upgrades available in the game. Each has a different effect. Certain upgrades give armor a greater amount of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The name of the upgrade will indicate the type of upgrade an item can receive, as shown below.

Some of the upgrades are also magic or a hybrid of magic and technology, which is indicated by the "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Additionally, some upgrades require charges to use, which is shown by an "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades refresh daily or never expire according to the upgrade.

The cheapest way to upgrade armor is to use Iron Ore, which can be obtained by exploring the environment and looting chests of minor loot. Titanium is more expensive but it can be obtained from the smelters in Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, like the Reforge or the Hot Potato Books can only be applied to armor pieces of the highest level. These upgrades can provide significant improvements in stats and are well worth the investment.

The process of upgrading an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will dramatically increase its defense capabilities, but the player should be aware that increasing its weight will dramatically reduce its speed and agility. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The added defense generally isn't worth the weight and power costs of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to enhance certain aspects of their weapon. For instance an upgrade can improve the damage that is caused by a shotgun's shells or the accuracy of a rifle sniper. Certain firearms also have upgrades that improve their innate characteristics. They include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and decreases the chance of weapon overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases the speed of projectiles to cause more damage).

The majority of upgrades to weapons require one of three Power Dices, a different amount of Minerals and Erons and a whetblade for applying. These are obtained through either finishing side quests, taking out a certain number of monsters or bosses, or by contacting the Weapon Upgrade NPC located in Central Flarine.

The process of upgrading a weapon, equipment Set piece, or Whetblade requires visiting the NPC [Armor] Boboko in Central Flarine and paying her an upgrade cost of a certain number of Bars. The higher the upgrade level, the higher the number of bars are required to complete it. If you have multiple upgrade materials the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5, the way you upgrade item your equipment and weapon sets was a bit different. Previously, you could seek out an Upgrade Bench and pay a certain amount of Bars to upgrade your weapon or equipment to a higher level of rarity. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level at which point the upgrades would reset.

You can still do this but the process is based on RNG and low on agency. Instead, you're better off going to stores and purchasing equipment that has low upgrade levels but excellent base scores and stat distributions. These will then have a chance at gaining you the highest tier perks and blessings.

Most players will want to prioritize upgrades to the weapons they most often use to make sure they are able to level up quicker. Players should also upgrade the weapons their teammates use to boost their strength. Shepard for instance, should upgrade the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R. This will make the weapon more useful when used in conjunction with biotic specialists such as Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels are utilized in the sockets of armor and weapons, enhancing a stat and providing secondary effects. They can be created using the process of jewelry crafting, in which you combine a gem with several chemicals at a table. The higher the quality of the gemstone, the better the secondary effect. These reagents can be gotten from Treasure Goblins and World Bosses around the world, or by finding Legendary Gear. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler for gold and a Scattered Prism.

The Jeweler can enhance the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem, it will provide a different stat boosts when inserted into weapons, equipment and jewelry.

All levels of jewels can be crafted at the Jeweler and Jeweler's Workshop, with the exception of the rare and legendary jewels that require you to be at a certain level to qualify for them. In contrast to other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped out with another jewel of the same type without damaging it. However you can only swap out the jewels in a piece of equipment once.

The use of more jewels in a movement will make it more smooth and is typically done to enhance the aesthetics of the movement. Jewels also enhance performance and make a surface harder than steel, so that the repeated friction from pivots does not cause damage to the movement.

A Glyphmaster can provide glyphs to enhance the appearance of your weapons and shields. These glyphs provide a small boost in power and can be swapped, but they're not guaranteed to show up as loot. Glyphs can be upgraded as jewelry, by visiting the Jeweler for gold and Scattered Crystal. Glyphs are also removed, which returns them to the inventory. Other upgrade components like aegis or traits cannot be exchanged and can only be found with an Upgrade extractor or salvaging with the Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets are small pieces of equipment that provide many small, but beneficial advantages to your hero. They can be obtained in the areas of starting as loot or personal story rewards from vendors, and by performing road interactions. They can be found on the Trading Post, or crafted by jewelers.

The first trinket that a player can unlock is the cloak. It grants a small, but useful bonus in movement speed and the ability to evade. The player can then collect necklaces, rings, and amulets in a similar manner as they did with weapons and armor. Each piece of equipment comes with one upgrade items slot that can accept either a universal or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades offer fewer benefits and can be used in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded, and is only compatible with certain kinds of trinkets.

These trinkets provide additional buffs and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't fighting. This allows the hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the absence of strong slot in the talent tree or team that are normally filled by a hero's top stats.

A good general rule of thumb for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best-in-Slot) items that you aren't planning to replace soon, followed by items with desirable stats, but less important than the iLevel of the item to be upgraded. This is especially true when you're looking to upgrade several stats on an item. It is best to upgrade just one crucial stat than two less important ones.

In the beginning of the game, players who are in the jungle will typically want to upgrade their trinket into a red one in the middle and top players typically choose either a pink or green ward (depending on the game's matchup). These choices can affect the hero's ability to manage the map.

Aside from the items mentioned above, players may also discover a variety of other items in the form of awards and trophies. These can be earned by completing certain milestones in the story. For instance, completing the main quest of a chapter or defeating a boss. These achievements can be seen by selecting the relevant achievement from the reward tab of the hero menu.
